Sometimes I wonder which feeling is stronger, the willingness to explore or the chance to separate from our everyday lives and finally some time alone with nature.
Everyone has their perfect holidays in mind, but did you ever consider going outside your comfort zone and escaping to the place where only thing that matters is the wind in the sails and the boat rocking on the waves? Did you ever consider running away to sea? To me, it makes me stop thinking about the predicaments of life and gives the time to choose the conscientious pathways. Because, you can’t change the direction of the wind, but can adjust your sails to always reach your destination (J.Dean).
So what is about sailing that brings us the enthusiasm?
To start with, from the moment you step on board, you step away from the world you know. You become to see yourself in a new light – you expand your horizons. It is an amazing way to gain a different perspective of the world you live in. It’s like going back to the fundamentals of life.
Life is as unpredictable as the weather and whilst sailing you have to use your intelligence and skills to work with the winds and waves. The stronger the wind higher the adrenaline. On the contrary when the water is calm you will have a chance to relax and enjoy the world from a different perspective. You are completely removed from the stresses and strains of everyday life.
Do not worry about extreme weather conditions, storms and strong winds! This is something for experienced, advanced sailors. Unless you are in search of some real adrenaline and are a sporty person, most of sailing excursions are on warm waters, often around a group of islands and with overnight stays in a quiet bays.
Why is it perfect for solo travellers?
Well, holidays on boats are about living and working together as a team. Thus, they are a perfect opportunity to get to know new interesting people and spend some valuable time in amazing surroundings. It is a great chance to learn how to communicate with others and if you are not used to company, to accept and make the most of it. You will all share a common experience and will need to work alongside each other. There is one thing that you should be aware of – very often you are with the same people in a limited space, therefore you might not get a lot of privacy.
To join a sailing excursion you do not have to be a member of any club nor to have any experience. You can be any shape, size or age. This is why it’s just a perfect holiday option for single travellers who look for the adventure and escape. There are many tour operators who specialise in selling sailing holidays for solo travellers. The types of holidays vary from the level of your qualifications, desires and what you need from your holiday, and there is a plenty of options to choose from. (Onestopsailing.com offers some great sailing holidays for individuals). In most cases, the idea is that you book yourself a place/berthon the boat and simply join the crew. There is always a qualified and experienced skipper on the boat who is responsible safety and also will help you to learn the basic sailing skills.
